BoE venezuela 15 August min

Rock Around The Blockade is co-hosting this event organised by our sister campaign, Viva Venezuela!

Protest at the Bank of England, London, 12pm-2pm on 15 August 2020. Facebook event here.

Breaking international law but in total alignment with Britain's piratical imperialism, London's High Court of Justice on 2 July ruled against the repatriation of 31 tonnes of Venezuela's gold destined to be used for emergency Covid-19 provisions. The Bank of England claims to be free from political influence, but the British government has already expressed its intention to 'freeze Venezuelan gold deposits' in collaboration with US imperialist economic warfare against Venezuela. US and EU sanctions have undermined Venezuela's currency, costing an estimated 100,000 human lives due to the difficulty of importing essential medicines, and economic damage of $194 billion between 2016 and 2019.

The World Health Organization has identified Latin America as the new centre for coronavirus pandemic, but the situation in Cuba appears to be under control. Cubans are now 24 times less likely to catch the virus than Dominicans, 27 times less likely to catch it than Mexicans, and more than 70 times less likely to be infected than Brazilians.

Alongside their domestic success, brigades of Cuban medical professionals have travelled to other countries to assist in the international effort against the virus. Thousands of Cuban medics are providing treatment and training across the globe.

Speaking tour

Manchester / Liverpool / Nottingham / London

Cuba has a world-leading record in sustainable development; improving lives within the carrying capacity of its ecosystem. The socialist state switched to organic agriculture and urban farming in the 1990s and now has a 100-year plan to protect the natural environment and population from climate change, while working to increase the use of renewable energies. Professor Reinaldo Funes Monzote, a Cuban environmental historian, will be in Britain to explain how the Revolution has addressed the environmental damage to the island from centuries of colonial rule and imperialist domination and the challenges under the socialist system.
