Nicolas Maduro, candidate of the Bolivarian Revolution, has won the 14 April snap presidential election with 50.66 percent of the vote against 49.07 percent for his neoliberal challenger Henrique Capriles Radonski. With the turn out at nearly 79 percent of the electorate, the results were announced with 99.12 percent of the votes totalled and were considered an irreversible trend.
Carrying out the premeditated plan exposed by the Bolivarian government, Capriles and the opposition have refused to recognise the result declaring to Nicolas Maduro, ‘The one who has been defeated is you and everything you represent’. The national electoral body, the CNE, will now conduct a citizens’ audit of 100 percent of the ballot boxes, with the backing of both candidates. Maduro stated: ‘Let’s do it! No problem. Perhaps they will find that my victory will be larger’.
The election was called following the death of Hugo Chavez on 5 March. As we reported in the current issue of Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism!, in selecting Nicolas Maduro as vice-president of Venezuela last October, Chavez described him as ‘a complete revolutionary, a man of great experience despite his youth, with great dedication and capacity for work, for leading, for handling the most difficult situations’. Chavez urged Venezuelans to vote for Maduro as the next President in the event of his death.
Maduro has the firm backing of his party, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), the Communist Party and the other parties and social movements that make up the political committee of the Great Patriotic Pole. Despite unfounded speculation that Maduro could ‘ease’ relations with private business and the US government, he stood for election on the same programme of ‘Bolivarian Socialist management’ for 2013-2019 that swept Chavez to victory in autumn last year. Indeed, at Chavez’s commemoration service on 8 March, Maduro referred to both this programme and the 1999 constitution, ratified by popular referendum in the first years of Chavez’s presidency. He stated:
‘We will continue, we’ll go on together, the people, the Armed Forces, your constitution, with your political testament, with your example and with our love. We’ll continue protecting the poor, we’ll continue giving food to those who need it, we’ll continue building the education of our children, we’ll continue building the Grand Homeland, we’ll continue building peace, peace, peace for our continent, the peace of our people—So Commander, mission accomplished, Commander President! The battle goes on. Chavez lives!’
Viva Chavez!
Victory to Maduro and the Bolivarian Revolution!
